3 Days Mount Kenya Trek using the Sirimon Route

3 Days

The 3-day Sirimon Route itinerary is an aggressive, compressed trek to Point Lenana (4,985m). It requires good prior fitness. You will hike through diverse landscapes—from montane forests to alpine moorlands—climbing past giant lobelias with the goal of reaching the summit in time for the iconic African sunrise.

Detailed Itinerary

  • Day 1: Nairobi to Old Moses Camp (3,300m)
Depart Nairobi for the 4 to 5-hour drive to Nanyuki Town for lunch, then proceed to the Sirimon Gate. After completing park entry formalities, you will embark on a 3 to 4-hour hike (9 km) through the lush forest and bamboo zones to Old Moses Camp.
  • Day 2: Old Moses to Shipton’s Camp (4,200m)
Hike for 6 to 7 hours (14 km) across the sprawling moorlands, crossing the Ontulili and Liki North rivers before entering the picturesque Mackinder’s Valley. You will arrive at Shipton’s Camp in the afternoon to rest, eat, and prepare for your summit attempt.
  • Day 3: Shipton’s Camp to Point Lenana (4,985m) and Descent
You will wake up early (around 2:30 AM) to start your summit push. The 3 to 4-hour climb ascends steep scree and rocky tracks in the dark to reach Point Lenana in time to watch the sunrise. Afterward, descend to Old Moses Camp for a brief rest, continue down to the Sirimon Gate, and transfer back to Nairobi.
