Itinerary Overview
Day 1: Nairobi to Met Station (3,000m)
- Drive & Hike: Transfer from Nairobi to the Naro Moru Park Gate (2,600m) for registration. Hike 3–4 hours (10km) through the rain forest and bamboo belt to Met Station.
- Accommodation: Met Station bunkhouse.
Day 2: Met Station to Mackinder’s Camp (4,200m)
- Hike: Trek 5–6 hours (10km) ascending through the heath zone and crossing the notorious “vertical bog” before entering the wide Teleki Valley beneath the Lewis Glacier.
- Accommodation: Mackinder’s Camp bunkhouse.
Day 3: Summit Day (Point Lenana, 4,985m) & Descend
- Summit Push: Wake up early (typically 2:00 AM) to scramble up loose scree and bare rock, reaching the summit in 3–4 hours for a sunrise over the African plains.
- Descend: Descend back to Mackinder’s for breakfast, then continue down to the Met Station for a well-deserved rest.
- Accommodation: Met Station bunkhouse.
Day 4: Met Station to Nairobi
- Descend: Walk 3 hours (9km) down through the rainforest to the Naro Moru Park Gate, where your transport will take you back to Nairobi.
Starting in Naro Moru town, the first part of the route takes you along a gravel road through farmlands for some 13km to the start of the forest. Another 5km brings you to the park entry gate (2400m), from where it’s 8km to the road-head, and the Met Station Hut(3000m), where you stay for the night and acclimatize. The route is not particularly scenic but has some of the best tourist accommodations. Most climbers begin at the park gate, although it is possible to drive a vehicle as far as the Met station (3050 meters). Among the challenges in this route include the vertical bog and the extremely steep trail on looses gravel while going up.
